NNPC to Break Ground on Five Mini LNG Plants

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) is set to launch the construction of five mini Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Thursday, February 5, 2025.

In a public announcement made via its official X handle, the NNPC outlined the names of the five mini-LNG plants: PRIME LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete. The initiative is part of the company’s strategy to expand the country’s natural gas production, storage, and distribution network, particularly in areas not served by the current pipeline infrastructure.

A mini LNG plant is designed to produce and distribute liquefied natural gas in smaller quantities, using trucks and refuelling stations at strategic locations to reach last-mile customers.

The event’s theme, “From Gas to Prosperity: Catalysing Nigeria’s Economic Growth,” underscores the government’s vision to foster a sustainable energy future for the nation. The NNPC emphasized that the construction of these plants would play a vital role in Nigeria’s economic growth.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content, expressed optimism about the project’s potential impact, stating, “We are grateful to NNPC for this significant investment in Ajaokuta. These plants will not only transform our community but also establish Ajaokuta as a hub for innovation and industrial growth.”

Mele Kyari, NNPC’s Group Managing Director, had previously hinted at the project during a conference last year, affirming the company’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s energy sector.
