NLCGA Clarifies Safety Guidelines on LPG Cylinder Filling Amidst Social Media Confusion

The Nigeria Liquefied & Compressed Gases Association (NLCGA) has addressed growing concerns over a viral video circulating on social media that misinterprets safety guidelines regarding the filling of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders.

In the video, a well-meaning individual advises users of cooking gas cylinders to avoid filling cylinders to their prescribed weight. Specifically, the video claims that a “12kg” cylinder should only be filled to “11kg” for safety. This message has caused widespread confusion, with many social media users sharing the video.

However, the NLCGA has clarified that this information is factually incorrect. While it is essential to avoid overfilling cylinders, the NLCGA stresses that cylinders should be filled to their specified weight, as defined by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

“The prescribed weight, which is embossed on each cylinder, is based on the cylinder’s design and accounts for the expansion of gas in different weather conditions,” said an NLCGA spokesperson. “For example, a ‘12.5kg’ cylinder has a liquid capacity of approximately 26.5 liters, and its safe filling weight is 12.95kg. This is fully in line with the SON’s NIS 69 specification for refillable LPG cylinders.”

The NLCGA emphasizes that all cylinders should be filled according to the marked capacity to ensure safety and prevent any risks associated with improper filling.

The association urges the public to be cautious about misleading information and to consult reliable sources for safety guidelines.
