The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a disturbance in the national grid that occurred at approximately 11:29 AM, triggered by a sudden spike in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz. Ndidi Mba spokesperson of TCN say immediate recovery measures were taken, with the Abuja Axis restored quickly, although further restoration efforts are ongoing.
The frequency increase was traced to issues at one of TCN’s substations, which had to be shut down to prevent further complications. “The disturbance was unexpected, but we responded quickly to mitigate any extended outages,” Mba said. She added that in addition to this disturbance, the company is actively engaged in critical repair works across several vital transmission lines and substations.
Among the significant repairs underway is the 330kV transmission line along the Shiroro–Mando axis, along with substantial upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation and the restoration of the Ugwuaji–Apir 330kV transmission line.
The TCN spokesperson noted that “these upgrades and restorations are part of our commitment to strengthening grid reliability and addressing known vulnerabilities.”
TCN further reported that, following the recent submission of an investigative report on the causes of previous grid collapses, they have initiated corrective measures based on the committee’s recommendations. “We’re addressing the gaps identified in the report and implementing both technical upgrades and strategic interventions to improve the system’s stability,” she confirmed.
Acknowledging the impact on the public, TCN urged patience, noting that while these repairs and improvements are ongoing, occasional instability in the power supply could continue. “We understand the inconvenience these disturbances cause, and we ask for the public’s understanding as we work to complete these essential upgrades,” Mba said in a statement .
