The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) recently marked a significant milestone in the life of its Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Mele Kyari, as he celebrated his 60th birthday. The occasion was a reflection not only of his personal achievements but also of his impactful leadership in the energy sector of Nigeria.
Engr. Kyari, a seasoned oil and gas expert, has played a pivotal role in transforming NNPC into a globally competitive and commercially viable corporation. In his heartfelt statement, President Tinubu expressed immense pride in Kyari’s remarkable achievements, particularly in reshaping the NNPCL into a profitable organization.
The President said that despite initial skepticism, Kyari’s leadership has driven significant growth in the sector. Under his guidance, the NNPCL has revived two refineries, expanded domestic natural gas consumption, and ramped up oil production to an impressive 1.8 million barrels per day.
“Kyari is a shining example and embodiment of the ideals of the Renewed Hope Agenda. I commend his commitment to creating new opportunities and ensuring the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s energy sector,” Bayo Onanuga Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, to President said in a congratulatory message. He praised Engr. Kyari for his unwavering dedication and tireless efforts toward driving the country’s energy sector forward.
Other industry leaders said “Engr. Kyari has demonstrated an exceptional ability to lead the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited with vision, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility. Under his stewardship, NNPC has seen unprecedented growth, improved transparency, and a more efficient and accountable structure. We are proud of his leadership,” .
The birthday good will messages and celebration also featured numerous tributes from industry players who lauded the achievements of the Group CEO. Former Group Executive Directors of NNPC, “Engr. Kyari, who hails from Maiduguri, Borno State, began his career in the oil and gas sector in the early 1980s. His work spans across various national and international roles, leading to his appointment as Group Managing Director of NNPC in 2019. His leadership has been instrumental in implementing far-reaching reforms in the sector, including the modernization of Nigeria’s refining capacity, the promotion of gas as a cleaner energy source, and the continued development of the nation’s oil and gas resources.
