German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has lauded the enduring and diverse relationship between Germany and Nigeria, underscoring strong cultural, political, and economic connections as the bedrock of their partnership. Speaking during his visit to Nigeria, Steinmeier highlighted the dynamic cultural exchange between the two nations, particularly in the arts.
“We have a very, very vivid exchange of artists between Germany and Nigeria,” he noted during a press briefing. “What we see here is a documentation of the variety of Nigerian artists.”
The German President expressed his enthusiasm for the mutual efforts of both countries to strengthen bilateral ties. He referenced a morning press conference with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing collaboration.
“I think that is what the two presidents, myself and the Nigerian president, expressed and explained this morning,” Steinmeier said. “We are trying to deepen our relations, and, you know, that cannot be done without the presence on both sides.”
Steinmeier also stressed the importance of sustained engagement and collaboration. Reflecting on his longstanding interactions with Nigerian leaders, he spoke warmly of his relationship with President Tinubu and past Nigerian presidents.
“So I was very happy to receive your president last year in Germany,” he said, referencing President Tinubu’s visit to Germany in 2023. “And I’m happy to be here again for, in the meanwhile, the third time. So I know a little bit about Nigeria, but I have to come very often in the future to know everything.”
The German leader’s visit highlights the shared vision of both nations to foster deeper connections across various sectors, including culture, trade, and diplomacy. Germany and Nigeria have a history of cooperation, with Germany serving as one of Nigeria’s leading trade partners within the European Union.
The focus on cultural exchange comes at a time when Nigerian artists are gaining global recognition, with many finding platforms in Germany to showcase their talents. Steinmeier’s emphasis on this aspect of the bilateral relationship demonstrates Germany’s appreciation for Nigeria’s rich artistic heritage.
As part of his visit, Steinmeier engaged with artists and cultural leaders, further cementing the ties between the two nations. His remarks reflect a commitment to not just maintain but actively expand the relationship, ensuring that the partnership remains robust and mutually beneficial.
This marks the third visit of President Steinmeier to Nigeria, a testament to his dedication to fostering stronger ties with Africa’s largest economy. Both nations look forward to continued collaboration in areas of mutual interest, strengthening their bonds for years to come.
